At the forks of two Grand tributaries, the Speed and the Eramosa rivers, lies Guelph’s compact downtown, a wonderful mix of:

  • heritage buildings including Guelph City Hall and 8 century-old churches
  • modern facilities like River Run Centre and the Guelph Sports and Entertainment Centre
  • unique shops and restaurants and Old Quebec Street – a pedestrian shopping street of boutiques and restaurants featuring a retractable roof.

On the hill above the city core towers the Church of Our Lady Immaculate, Guelph’s magnificent Gothic cathedral, now designated as a National Historic Site.

The city’s colourful history is on display at McCrae House (also a National Historic site), the former home of Colonel John McCrae, author of “In Flanders Fields”. A great way to experience the City's history is to take a historical walking tour.  Guelph Arts Council offers one of six different tours on Sunday afternoons April through October.  More information about historic Guelph can also be found at the Guelph Civic Museum.

The community’s many resident artists and musical ensembles perform year-round at venues throughout the city. Some key events to enjoy in Guelph:

  • Contemporary Dance Festival in early June
  • Multicultural Festival in mid June
  • Art on the Street in July
  • the Hillside Festival in late July
  • the Guelph Jazz Festival in September
  • Guelph Studio Tour in October
  • Fair November (an Artisan and Craft sale) in mid November.

As a winner of an international Communities in Bloom prize, the city is noted for its spacious and stunning civic gardens. The floral clock at Riverside Park and the Arboretum on the University of Guelph campus are highlights.

The City boasts a well-established network of recreational trails that cater to walkers, cyclists and runners. Launch a canoe or kayak in the Speed or Eramosa River and take a leisurely paddle through the city for a different perspective. A popular paddling launch point is at the Boathouse on Gordon St.

Take the opportunity to tour the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre on the university campus and peruse the latest exhibit, its outdoor sculpture park or the permanent Inuit art collection. Explore the lively Guelph Farmer’s Market on a Saturday morning, or discover the artisan studios and antique shops that dot the city.
