The Grand River and its tributaries have been designated a Canadian Heritage River system, and it is easy to see why. French explorers visited it in the 1600s. The Six Nations people established their new home in the river valley in the 1700s. Waves of settlers, including German Mennonites, Scots, Irish and English flooded into Grand River Country in the 1800s. Their legacies live on in the unique buildings, imposing monuments, national historic sites and intriguing museums and galleries of Grand River Country.
