No matter what time of year there is something for
everyone from bird watching with the new ‘Birding in
Wellington North Trail’ to snowmobiling and spectacular
summer events like the Fireworks Festival in Mount
Forest.
Wellington North cherishes it rural roots, heritage
homes, century farms and grand old buildings whose
Victorian facades line the main streets of both Arthur
and Mount Forest. You will find elegant clothing stores
here for men and women plus the fun of shopping in
quirky shops specializing in memorabilia, antiques and
even model trains.
On the back roads watch for the unexpected surprises of
farm gate signs selling eggs, honey fresh fruits and
vegetables, flowers, maple syrup and silky smooth
cheeses made from both goat’s and sheep milk at on-farm
dairies. And of course 14 different kinds of butter
tarts made at scratch bakeries featured on ‘the Butter
Tart Trail™’.
If a natural retreat is your choice the Luther Marsh
Wildlife Management Area is open for hikers, cyclists
and even boaters in some seasons. Part of the GRCA
system, Luther Marsh is also a bird sanctuary and a
focus of the Birding in Wellington North Trail,
Bobolinks to Snipes. Both the Birding Trail map and the
Butter Tart Trail™ can be found on the
www.wellington-north.com website under Tourism.
Identifying birds by sight and sound is a lifelong
learning experience and a healthy outdoor pastime for
millions of people. Approximately 145 bird species nest
in Wellington North in late spring and summer. Dozens
more species pass through on migration. Thousands of
waterfowl stage in fields and wetlands in autumn.
Far-northern species such as Snow Bunting, Rough-legged
Hawk, and Snowy Owl are winter regulars.
